Koube Shiritsu Sumakaihinsuizokuen神戸市立須磨海浜水族園
The former Kobe Municipal Suma Aqualife Park in Suma Ward, Kobe. It opened in 1987 (Showa 62) and was long beloved, but as its facilities aged, a fundamental redevelopment under a privately built and operated model, drawing on private-sector expertise and funding for sustainable operation, was decided, and it closed on May 31, 2023. Its successor, Kobe Suma Sea World, opened on June 1, 2024, as the only facility in western Japan exhibiting orcas, taking over about 90% of the existing animals.
