Australia Zoo in Beerwah, Queensland, was opened on 3 June 1970 by Bob and Lyn Irwin, originally as the Beerwah Reptile Park. It spans over 750 acres, of which about 110 acres (45 ha) are open to the public, and hosts more than 1,200 animals. The zoo is closely tied to the Irwin family: Steve Irwin took over management in 1991, and after his death in 2006 his daughter Bindi Irwin serves as chief executive officer.
