Ehime Kenritsu Dougo Doubutsuen愛媛県立道後動物園

An Ehime prefectural zoo that opened in 1953 (Showa 28). Long cherished as the only zoo in the prefecture, it faced growing complaints about noise and odor because of its proximity to the hot-spring town and residential areas, and its small site made expansion difficult, so a move to the more spacious town of Tobe was decided. It kept a variety of animals including the elephants Taro and Hanako, lions, tigers, bears, monkeys, and kangaroos, but closed on October 21, 1987 (Showa 62), handing its role to Tobe Zoo, which opened the following year.
