The emperor penguin is the tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species, breeding in the depths of the Antarctic winter on sea ice. Males alone incubate the single egg for about two months without eating, huddling together in temperatures well below freezing while females forage at sea.

IUCNレッドリストで絶滅危惧種(EN)。2026年4月に準絶滅危惧(NT)から引き上げられた。南極の海氷減少が続けば2080年代までに個体群が半減すると予測されている。

南極大陸沿岸の海氷上。厳冬の南極で繁殖する唯一のペンギン。
