The Snares penguin, also known as the Snares crested penguin, is a crested penguin endemic to the Snares Islands south of New Zealand, distinguished from the similar Fiordland penguin by its stouter bill. It feeds mainly on krill, fish, and squid, diving to depths of nearly 120 meters. Restricted to a single small island group and protected as a strict nature reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is classified as Vulnerable and is not kept in any Japanese zoo or aquarium.
