Born around 2:00 p.m. on July 7, 2025, at Nihondaira Zoo as one of two cubs to mother Niko and father Kazu (the other cub died on July 11). It was the zoo's first red panda birth in two years, and the official news reported healthy growth: at 15 days old she weighed 320 g, with a head-and-body length of 25 cm and a tail length of 8 cm.
Because she was born on Tanabata (July 7), the zoo solicited names related to '7' (nana), drawing 820 entries covering 415 different names. From the four finalists, her mother Niko made the choice, and the name became 'Nanako'; the entrant explained that it carries one character from her mother's name 'Niko' and has a cute ring to it. The moment the name was decided was recorded before a public audience on November 22, 2025, and streamed on the zoo's official YouTube channel. The naming event is reported in detail in the zoo's official news.
