A female born June 23, 2013, she is a granddaughter of Futa (Chiba Zoological Park), who took the nation by storm with his standing pose. As an animal of prime breeding age, she moved from Chiba Zoological Park to Omuta Zoo on November 17, 2016, to contribute to breeding of the endangered red panda. Chiba Zoological Park held a farewell party, where her keepers shared memories along with videos and photos and sent her off with a gift of her favorite apples.
She is listed as a resident on Omuta Zoo's official animal profile page, and on June 26, 2018, she gave birth to a male, 'Rei,' at the zoo. The official page lists Mai's birth date as June 23, 2013, and presents her together with Ren and Rei as the zoo's three red pandas. The page was updated in October 2018.
