Records
Born August 23 to 24, 2023, as one of four siblings to father Biju and mother Senti. It was Kaiyukan's first successful Asian small-clawed otter breeding in 10 years. He weighed 118 to 128 g as of August 29 and had grown to 508 to 536 g by October 17.
On April 24, 2024, he made his debut in the 'Japan Forest' tank with his brothers Hinoki and Myoga. An observation log from May 27, 2026, described him being cautious about climbing onto a new raft: he leaned his upper body out over it but could not work up the nerve to get on, hesitating even when Shii urged him along.
His name comes from the beech tree (buna); he and his siblings Shii, Myoga, and Hinoki were all given plant names after trees and plants found in the species' native habitat. Kaiyukan's husbandry records continue to highlight the personality differences among the siblings.
