Frankfurt Zoo (Zoo Frankfurt), near the city center of Frankfurt in Hesse, Germany, was founded by local citizens in 1858 and is the second-oldest zoo in the country. Spanning more than 11 hectares, it keeps over 4,500 animals of more than 510 species. It is closely tied to the zoologist Bernhard Grzimek, its post-war director, and to the globally active Frankfurt Zoological Society.
