The koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) is a tree-dwelling marsupial of eastern Australia's eucalypt forests, spending up to 20 hours a day asleep and feeding almost exclusively on eucalyptus leaves. Uniquely, mothers pass gut bacteria to their young through a specialized form of feces, allowing them to digest the toxic leaves. Populations have declined sharply from habitat loss, bushfires, vehicle strikes, and chlamydia disease, and the species is classified as Vulnerable, with some Australian states listing it as endangered.

IUCNは2014年に「危急種（Vulnerable）」に分類。オーストラリア首都特別地域・ニューサウスウェールズ州・クイーンズランド州では2022年2月に絶滅危惧種指定を受けた。

Habitat

オーストラリア東部の沿岸ユーカリ林。約100万平方キロメートル、30の生態地域に分布する。

  • 都市化・農地開発による森林伐採
  • 山火事（低速で逃げられずユーカリの高い可燃性も相まって被害が大きい）
  • 交通事故・イヌによる捕食（年間死亡数の約3分の2を占める）
  • クラミジア感染症やコアラレトロウイルスなどの疾病
  • 気候変動による生息域の乾燥・縮小予測
