Records

A male finless porpoise living at Toba Aquarium who celebrated his 21st birthday on April 18, 2026 (born April 18, 2005). About a year has passed since he moved into the exhibit pool on April 21, 2025, and he continues to thrive there. Lately he is often seen swimming affectionately with his poolmate Hello, another finless porpoise. Toba Aquarium has kept finless porpoises since 1963 and marked its 60th anniversary in 2023, and Mario is a beloved member of that exhibit. Finless porpoises are smooth-skinned members of the dolphin and porpoise family that lack a dorsal fin, and they live in familiar Japanese waters such as Tokyo Bay, Nagoya Port, and Osaka Bay.

Toba Aquarium's finless porpoise husbandry, which has passed its 50th and 60th anniversaries, is one of the leading such efforts in Japan, and Mario shows visitors what these animals are like in the exhibit pool.
