Records
A baby dugong estimated to be 1 year old, she was rescued on October 10, 1986, near Palawan Island in the Philippines after being separated from her parent, and entered Toba Aquarium on April 15 the following year, 1987. Her name 'Serena' means 'mermaid' in Tagalog, and she was presented by then-Philippine President Aquino as a symbol of Japan-Philippines friendship.
On entry she measured about 147.5 cm and weighed about 67 kg. By her 35th anniversary at the aquarium on April 15, 2022, she had grown to about 260 cm and about 380 kg.
As of September 15, 2018, she had been at the aquarium for 11,476 days (31 years and 5 months), setting a new world record for the longest a dugong has been kept in captivity. The previous record holder was the aquarium's own dugong 'Junichi' (who reached 31 years and 152 days on February 10, 2011).
On April 15, 2026, she marked her 39th anniversary at the aquarium, where keepers watch over her as the only dugong kept in Japan. At the commemorative ceremony she nestled up to a diver and ate heartily of the seaweed presented to her.
