Records
Born at Kagoshima's Hirakawa Zoo, she came to Toba Aquarium in 2018. She was said to be 5 years old on arrival and was paired with the male Asahi, who arrived from Shirahama around the same time.
In August 2020, Kibo was pregnant and nearing her due date. From August 3, keepers stayed overnight to watch over her around the clock, but on August 4 she died following a stillbirth.
Kibo's death was a serious blow to the breeding program, but Asahi was paired anew with Kiwa, who arrived in 2021, and breeding continued. The aquarium shared the course of events in its keeper's diary to keep visitors informed, and information was also shared with Kagoshima's Hirakawa Zoo, where Kibo was born.
In the roughly two and a half years from her arrival to her death, her pairing with Asahi served as the starting point of Toba Aquarium's Asian small-clawed otter breeding program.
