The American flamingo is a large, vividly pink filter-feeding bird of the Caribbean and northern South America, the only flamingo species native to North America. It wades through saline lagoons and coastal shallows, sweeping its uniquely bent bill through the water to strain out crustaceans, molluscs, and algae.
