Records
Born December 21, 2014, at Sapporo Maruyama Zoo to father Denali and mother Lara. Her name was decided by public vote; 'Rira' received the most votes, 1,271 of the 4,061 cast.
She began breeding efforts in winter 2023, and in 2025 she was housed and displayed in alternation with the male Light, who arrived from Kagoshima's Hirakawa Zoo. Since June 2026 she has alternated on display with her mother Lara, taking her turn in the Polar Bear House.
Her parents Denali and Lara had eight cubs in six litters, the most in Japan, and Rira is their youngest daughter. Since her father Denali died in September 2023, Rira plays a central role in the breeding plan as the living bear at Maruyama Zoo carrying Denali's bloodline. Her keepers continue to hope for breeding success.
