The male Ren was born on May 23, 2023, and the female Tsukushi the next day, May 24, to mother Kiwa and father Asahi. Ren's name comes from 'suiren' (water lily), an association with his father's name Asahi (morning sun), while Tsukushi's expresses the wish that she would grow up 'sukusuku' (quickly and healthily). Both were hand-reared by keeper staff. On November 1, 2023, their display, which had been suspended for tank maintenance, resumed in the L Zone 'Water Corridor.'

Tsukushi has a tall, narrow head and a blackish coat. Because she was hand-reared, her weight gain was slow at first, but by December 2024 she had grown to be the largest of the three. A keeper's diary entry from November 2025 describes her lively behavior, such as climbing on top of her mother Kiwa and sinking her teeth into rubber boots.
