The Georgia Aquarium opened on November 23, 2005 in downtown Atlanta, Georgia, and holds more than 11 million US gallons (about 42,000 m³) of water. It was the world's largest aquarium when it opened and remains the largest in the United States and the sixth largest in the world. It was the first institution outside Asia to house whale sharks, and its collection also features beluga whales, manta rays, bottlenose dolphins, California sea lions, and sea otters.
