The Monterey Bay Aquarium opened in 1984 on Cannery Row in Monterey, California, on the site of a former sardine cannery. It houses around 35,000 animals of more than 550 species, and is renowned for its towering living Kelp Forest tank, the Open Sea exhibit of tunas and sharks, and its habitat of rescued sea otters. Widely regarded as one of the world's leading aquariums, it also launched the Seafood Watch sustainability program in 1999.
