Adelaide Zoo, opened in 1883 on the banks of the River Torrens in Adelaide, South Australia, is the country's second-oldest zoo after Melbourne Zoo. Spread across about 8 hectares, it cares for more than 3,000 animals of some 250 species and is run by the not-for-profit Royal Zoological Society of South Australia (Zoos SA). It is best known for the Southern Hemisphere's largest giant panda centre, opened in 2009, and remains the only zoo in the Southern Hemisphere to house giant pandas.
