Zoo Zürich opened in 1929 on the slopes of the Zürichberg and is the third-oldest zoo in Switzerland. Spanning about 27 hectares, it keeps over 380 species in naturalistic habitats, and is renowned for the Masoala Rainforest Hall recreating Madagascar's lowland rainforest, the Kaeng Krachan Elephant Park, and the Lewa Savanna. It was the first European institution to successfully breed Galápagos tortoises.
