Duisburg Zoo, in Duisburg in western Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia, was founded by local citizens in 1934. Across roughly 16 hectares it keeps around 300 species and more than 5,000 animals, and is known for one of Germany's largest dolphinariums and, since 1994, Germany's first permanent koala facility. It runs a notable breeding program for the Madagascan fossa and coordinates that species' European conservation breeding.
