Zoo Aquarium de Madrid, in the Casa de Campo park, opened in its current form in 1972. Covering more than 20 hectares, it houses around 6,000 animals of some 500 species. It is one of the few zoos in the world to keep giant pandas, and in 1982 it saw the birth of the first panda cub conceived through artificial insemination in Europe.
