Tierpark Hagenbeck, in the Stellingen district of Hamburg, Germany, was opened on 7 May 1907 by Carl Hagenbeck Jr. It was the first zoo to use open, moated enclosures instead of barred cages, and its panorama exhibits influenced zoo design worldwide. It keeps one of Europe's largest elephant herds and includes an adjacent tropical aquarium opened in 2007.
