Zoo Berlin (the Berlin Zoological Garden) sits in the Tiergarten park in central Berlin and, founded on 1 August 1844, is the oldest zoo in Germany. It keeps around 20,000 animals (20,219 animals across 1,373 species as of 2017) and describes itself as the most species-rich zoo in the world. Famous for its Elephant Gate, giant pandas and Fatou (the oldest living gorilla in captivity), it draws over 3.5 million visitors a year, the most of any zoo in Europe.
